What is the OurTown Youth Leadership Institute?
The OurTown Youth Leadership Institute is a unique residential program for high school aged youth. OurTown prepares youth to be effective leaders and change agents who are dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, racism and other isms. Youth will participate in experiential learning activities and dialogue sessions designed to increase their understanding of human relations issues and of their own responsibility to create a community based on inclusion, trust, and mutual respect.
When will this year’s session take place?
Delegates will arrive the afternoon of Sunday July 12 and return home the evening of Saturday July 18, 2009.
Is OurTown Youth Leadership Institute like other summer residential programs?
No. OurTown is more of a personal growth experience than a traditional camp. Activities include discussion groups, role playing, learning exercises and presentations on human relations issues such as stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, ethnic and racial identity, gender issues, sexual orientation, communication based on inclusion, trust and mutual respect.
Who can apply?
Youth in grades 10-12 can apply for OurTown. Just Communities of NWA encourages people of all racial, ethic, gender, sexual orientation, class, cultural, physical ability, and other identity groups to apply. Please directly contact Jeff Patrick, Youth Program Director to let us know how we can serve you better with any accommodations.
How much does it cost?
OurTown Youth Leadership Institute is FREE! We write grants, work with donors, and hold fundraising events to help ensure that youth can attend OurTown.
How many participants will be attending?
Approximately 50 participants from Northwest Arkansas attend OurTown. Delegates are supported throughout the week by many staff members, allowing for a low participant-staff ratio.
What about the Institute facility, housing, meals and transportation?
OurTown Youth Leadership Institute is held at Subiaco Academy in Subiaco, Arkansas. Double occupancy dorm rooms will be used and meals are served three times a day. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the week. Just Communities of NWA will provide transportation from Springdale to Subiaco Academy.
