From Barriers to Bridges is an exciting art / diversity project for teens. Barriers to Bridges uses art, interaction and advocacy to break down bullying and build respect. Ideal for schools and youth groups of any kind—this programs results in a beautiful installation art piece that is a lasting reminder of the power of understanding. Barriers to Bridges is a partnership with the art mentoring program YouthCAN!
We live in a very diverse community. A community filled with many different religions, races, cultures, and values. I believe that with this diversity, comes a great responsibility. I believe that I have a responsibility to understand and appreciate those in our community. From Barriers to Bridges has given me a chance to explore this. We discussed stereotypes, oppression, and discrimination. But more importantly, we discussed how to break stereotypes, how to defeat oppression, and how to avoid discriminating against others. I’ve enjoyed the experience with Breaking Barriers because it’s given me more courage to go out there and defend those who are being isolated, discriminated against, or oppressed. I think it’s a great program because it’s showing people the beauty that exists in one another. In a world where there is so much division, it’s made me more aware that we’re more alike than unalike - Bernice McMillan, Springdale High School 2005 participant
